In March 2019, I popped over to Melbourne to visit Baum Cycles. Late last year my Grandmother passed away, and I inherited some money from her estate. So, what better way to ensure her memory lives on than getting a custom titanium bike. So, armed with that thought I ended up at Baum Cycles. It’s a luxury item and I appreciate that, but I also appreciate the engineering involved. Something my late Grandfather would also appreciate as he was a precision engineer (before becoming a professional Magician).

I was met by Ryan at the Baum workshops, he showed me around the factory floor, resplendent with lathes, grinders and various jigs. Then onto the paint shop, along the way every Baum member said hello. Especially as I was shown around the factory floor. Ryan worked out all my measurements on the bike jig, walked through colours etc and build. Though he cheekily put me on the spot with which model I should get! There was very little between the two disc-based road bikes on offer once I had spec’d up what I wanted. So it made sense to go for the top model, the Orbis. – hmm… not sure if I should have spoken to my accountant wife first, after all she did give me the upper limit on my spend.

While we were walking around, I noticed a lovely white number. Only to find it was Phil Andersons very own. He was recently appointed as the first Baum Ambassador (lucky fellow).

I even had the mandatory photo with Mr Baum himself, Darren Baum – who started Baum back in the mid-nineties.

With only a few weeks left until it arrives, Baum emailed me a photo of the frame in the paint-shop! Merry Christmas to me indeedy 🙂
