…as the song goes! :-p

The beginning of the day led us from Verai on the wrong road heading towards the motorway. Alas with all the new roads being built around Greece, the maps are not always up-to-date. Fortunately, Nic’s nose was primed and in full working order which saved the day and put us back on route (even cutting out the hill Verai is perched on!). Sedef has at last admitted that Nic is a better navigator and seems to have an uncanny (if not irritating) sense of knowing where North is and where we should be heading!

Galactaboureko!

Once on the (correct) road, we had a good day filled with surprises… first when we stopped for Galaktoboureko for lunch (made by the man’s momma) we were given two free bottles of water, then when we stopped for second lunch (Nic’s favourite time) we were given two free pens and finally as we were approaching Thessaloniki a 3-wheeler Piaggo stopped several hundred meters in front of us and the lady driver held out a bottle of water marathon runner style for us to grab as we sailed by. We like days like these, so if you’re on our route, we would like money, more Galaktoboureko and a large coffee (Strong, white and sweet) please! 😉

Somehow we managed to reach the city centre of Thessaloniki in one piece – surprising really given the locals crazy driving, one guy even crashed into the car in front of him while gawping at Sedef’s bike – serves him right! At least no one was hurt!

We wandered around the city not looking for Galaktoboureko and took in the sites, we visited Ataturk’s house (Founder of the modern Turkish Republic), where he was born. We had the whole place to ourselves apart from the tour guide and luckily once we finished a coach party arrived.
