Well it’s the final curtain call tonight for the Greek part of our trip – one more chance to get a Galaktoboureko or seven! Shame, just as our Greek is getting up to scratch and we can almost decipher the Greek lettering!!

We’ve made it ! (OK not quite…)

Last night we spent the evening in a lovely town called Sapai, which is 50/50% Greek/Turkish. One minute after arriving in the town square we were accosted by the local elders and treated to a coffee each (Nic was in seventh heaven!). Despite not being able to communicate that well with them, they told us where the local hotel was and Panos (one of the elders) even got his daughter to show us the way (in her car). Even then the welcoming nature of the townsfolk didn’t end, as Panos’s daughters then organised the room and booked us in – complete with filling out the registration card. As if that wasn’t enough, they offered to bring us some dinner!!! We ended up having dinner in a Turkish restaurant – being able to order exactly what we wanted (since Sedef placed the order in Turkish) was a welcome change!!

In stark contrast to the night before, in Xanthi where we were turned away from eight hotels in town, who all claimed to be full! In desperation we went back to the first hotel to beg for a place in the garden to pitch our tent – when miraculously a free single room materialised (the landlady having taken pity on us at last), which in fact turned out to be a double room after all! Funny enough the full hotel didn’t seem to have any customers other than us – which made us wonder if the treatment we received initially was because we were foreigners – we certainly didn’t smell (that much!)!
