‘Should we fly or should we cycle
If we fly there will be no trouble
If we cycle there will be double
So come on and let me know
Should we fly or should we cycle’

…in the words of Steppenwolf, we had a major decision to make: to cycle on to Iran (having just heard that our visas were approved) or to fly over it to Pakistan. We were jubilant upon returning from Cappadocia to hear that our visas were granted. Yet the joy was shortlived when the next two emails were from a knowledgeable contact aware of the situation on the ground in Iran, and the Iranian consulate enquiring about our whereabouts. We were made aware of the two bombings in Tehran aimed at British targets, and the escalating tension between Iran and the West in general, and Britain in particular.

After much deliberation, and sad as we were not to see this magnificent land, we decided to take the plane to the warm climes of Karachi, Pakistan. Alas we were also sad to leave Turkey so quickly – however there were no international airports in Eastern Turkey that we could fly to Pakistan from.

A big thank you goes to the Celik family who have made us feel so welcome and as one of their family during our long stay with them, whilst we were trying to figure out what to do. We hope to return their hospitality one day. They have thoroughly pampered and spoilt us – and we will certainly miss Kezban Teyze’s cooking!!

Watch this space for a post soon with a summary of our impressions of Turkey!
