We finally managed to get out of wet and windy England on day 3 to be greeted by magnificent sunshine and clear blue skies on the other side of the channel (and cyclist-friendly roads and motorists!).

The first few days of cycling saw us going through picturesque French villages and country lanes. The first signs of sunburn began to show on Nic’s arms and legs (despite the fact that he doesn’t get sunburnt! :p) and Sedef has panda eyes to go with her milky white feet. Nic’s feet are beginning to look like he is wearing white sandals!

Whatever you do don’t ever mention H. I. L. L. S. to Sedef as this is likely to result in a hail of expletives #^)@#$!!!

Joke aside we are both really enjoying it so far and are both getting stronger tackling ascents and difficult roads, and currently averaging 50kms a day (hoping to build up to 100kms by the end of Europe).

In Cambrai we met two friendly cyclists who bought us coffee – who are on their way from Paris to Amsterdam (one of them on a recumbent!). They gave us some tips on the route to St Quentin – which led us along a lovely tranquil canal away from all the traffic and lorries..

Next major stop – Besancon, before we climb into Switzerland.

Stats so far:

Distance covered: 270km
Top speed: 58km/hr (both – on the same descent)
First blood: Sedef (when she stumbled onto the chain ring – nothing serious)
Hills climbed: TOOOOOO many
Expletives shouted (at hills): TOOOOOOOOOO many
